Are Dentures Difficult to Get Used To?

Dentures are one of the best tooth replacement options available, but they can take some getting used to, especially when you first get them. As with any new skill — and learning to function with dentures is a skill — all you need is a little support and practice to start feeling more comfortable.

That’s where Dr. Mehrnoosh Darj and our Affordable Dental Associates team come in. Here, we’ve compiled a comprehensive guide to help you become a denture pro quickly.

Why can dentures be difficult to get used to?

Our patients love dentures because they’re removable and easy to clean. However, the things that make them so convenient are also some of their biggest challenges.

Because you can remove your dentures, they can also slide around a bit in your mouth while you’re talking or chewing, which can be hard to get used to at first.

On top of that, your tongue, gums, and facial muscles are relearning what it feels like to have a full set of teeth again. Some even say their mouths feel too crowded — at first.

How long until I get used to my dentures?

It’s hard to say how long it might take for you to get used to your new dentures. Some don’t have much trouble, and others experience a steeper learning curve. We recommend giving your dentures a full 30 days. If you’re still uncomfortable or struggling after that, come see us for an adjustment.

What can I do to adjust to dentures faster?

We’re so glad you asked. We want all of our denture patients to feel comfortable and confident about their new smiles. Here are some simple strategies for when you first get your dentures.

Wear your dentures every day

Dentures can feel unnatural when you first get them, and you might be tempted to take them out frequently during the day. We strongly encourage you to stick with the program and wear your dentures all day, every day (except for cleaning).

Soreness is typical in the early days, but if you experience severe pain or sore spots, give us a call, and we’ll schedule you to see Dr. Darj.

Practice makes perfect

You’re essentially starting from scratch when you get dentures, especially if you’re replacing a full row of teeth. So, the best thing to do is start practicing those skills that used to come naturally.

You can practice talking by reading out loud, calling your friends and family members, and singing your favorite songs while wearing your appliance. When you sit down to eat, start with soft foods, cut your portions into small chunks, and avoid tough, crunchy, or sticky foods.

Follow protocol

Taking your dentures out to clean them isn’t just good for the dentures themselves; it’s beneficial for your whole mouth. The time your dentures spend soaking overnight gives your gums much-needed rest so you can get right back to practicing the next day.
